Deep impact offshore

The high volume of new contracts for larger offshore vessels represents a colossal range of opportunities for ODIM in the subsea market. Sales of current systems are high, and in addition a range of new and exciting solutions are under development in co-operation with customers.

“Systems for handling diving bells, launch and recovery systems (LARS) for OBS-ROVs, and lift-compensated wire winches with capacities of 100 tonnes and over, are some of the products we will soon be ready to introduce into the market place,” says Vice President Sales & Marketing, Bjørn Roppen.

A range of many new products will result in a much larger and broader portfolio for ODIM in the subsea sector. Many of the new systems are being developed in close co-operation with customers who desire solutions based on ODIM’s technology. Our customers lay down high standards for many of the products they desire, but our in-depth knowledge of the market and the requirements of the ship owners and operators means that ODIM is ideally positioned to fulfil these wishes.

SYSTEMS THAT FUNCTION

“The large volume of feedback we receive from satisfied customers, telling us that our systems function as intended, results in a high level of enthusiasm in the subsea-group. The positive feedback creates a strong desire to develop new and first class products,” says Roppen. One example he points to is the research vessel “James Cook”, which was delivered in the autumn of 2006, and has been undergoing trials for several months. The standards stipulated in advance for systems that are to handle submersible research equipment were extremely high. ODIM is receiving reports from the ship’s owner, NERC, that all systems onboard the world’s most advanced research vessel are functioning faultlessly.

“ODIM LARS™ for ROVs is another success product from the subsea segment,” continues Bjørn Roppen. “One example of this is that Geoconsult DOF Subsea have purchased all of 17 ODIM LARS™ systems.”

COST EFFECTIVE

“ODIM also has great expectations for several new systems and solutions in the near future. A module-handling tower has been delivered to DeepOcean. On completion of tests, the report came back that they were extremely satisfied with the system, and several other companies are now showing a strong interest in purchasing similar solutions. Together with our new friends, ODIM JMC in Stavanger, we see an enormous potential here. They have complementary solutions that extend our portfolio several steps further. We are absolutely convinced that this co-operation will carry us forward to new products and new groups of customers,” says Roppen.

A Gamma Frame for use on board research vessels is another exciting product. One of the many customers who have purchased this solution is the Scots company Marlab, who in fact purchased several.

“Our objective is to contribute so that our customers can maximise cost-effectiveness. When they come back to us with orders for more of the same product, or challenge us to develop new products for specific tasks, they are giving us proof that we are succeeding in our aims,” says Bjørn Roppen, who has every reason to be optimistic about developments in his market segment over the course of the next few years.
