Hose-handling without putting people at riskThe first four vessels to use ODIM’s automated system designed to transfer bulk cargo between platforms and ships are currently being delivered by the shipyards. The ODIM ABCS™ system will shortly be installed onboard the StatoilHydro-operated platform Oseberg A in the Norwegian sector and at the offshore base at Mongstad north of Bergen. Until now, the transfer of bulk cargo between supply vessels and offshore installations has been potentially dangerous, especially in rough weather. In traditional hose-handling operations, a rig crane lifts the bulk hoses onboard the vessel, where they are secured manually by the crew. The technology to handle these operations without putting people at risk simply did not exist. NO MANUAL HANDLINGODIM has reinvented hose-handling with the ODIM ABCS™, an automated bulk hose connection. The system ensures that the bulk hoses are connected easily, with no need for manual handling. Instead, the system is operated safely from the bridge and does not expose people to risky crane operations. Due to increased safety for personnel, offshore supply vessels can now serve rigs in far tougher weather, thus increasing the number of operational days. Quick release enables operators to shut off the system safely at short notice. In case of emergencies, the quick release functionality detaches the hoses from the supply vessel. A safety valve closes the coupling automatically, avoiding the discharge of liquid into the sea and eliminating the risk of spills. COOPERATION“Here at ODIM we have been working on ODIM ABCS™ since the spring of 2003, and have cooperated with StatoilHydro on developing the system since December 2003,” says project manager Jarle Knut Hånes. Farstad played an active role during the initial tests and development of the concept. Prior to completion of the ODIM ABCS™ system, several operational issues were tested onboard the “Far Star”. The four vessels now being fitted with ODIM ABCS™ are being built for the Norwegian shipping companies Havila, DOF and Farstad. “Havila Foresight” was recently delivered by Havyard in Sogn, “Skandi Mongstad” by Kleven Maritime and “Far Seeker” by Aker Yards Brevik. “Far Searcher” will be delivered by the same shipyard at the end of February/early March. TESTING TO BEGIN SOON“The four supply vessels have long-term contracts with StatoilHydro and will be based at Mongstad north of Bergen,” Jarle Knut Hånes explains. During the initial testing period, the system will be used in connection with deliveries of bulk cargo to the Oseberg A platform. Later the plan is to install the ODIM ABCS™ system on other platforms. ODIM ABCS™ can handle all types of bulk cargo transported by supply vessels, both fluids and heavier products such as barite and cement can be transferred between supply vessels and platforms. |
A "ball" at the tip of the hose is received safely by the catcher on the supply vessel, connecting the bulk hose from the rig. The ODIM ABCS™ eliminates the need for risky manual handling. ODIM ABCS™ Video ODIM ABCS™ Brochure
